My Buddha source and friend, George Mahaffey has returned to Thailand, where he is resuming his journey and kindly sending me these wonderful photos. George tells me there are different Buddhas for each day of the week, and he believes that this one is a Saturday Buddha. I hope to learn more about this part of the culture later. For now, he sends us this beauty from Wat Pho. He/she is protected by a multi-headed serpent whose body coils below the Buddha's feet. OM....

My wish for us all is that in the comings weeks, we experience Epiphany! I have described it before as an unmistakable flash of 'knowingness'. These flashes are so fleeting, but if you have had one, you would know it. The few I have had have been somewhat generic. By that I mean that instead of hearing some profound message from a higher being or one who has passed, I feel it is a powerful reminder that ALL IS WELL. As messages go, this may not be enough to convince the average person that there is some mysterious force at work out there. I prefer to see these flashes as fragments of synchronicity that exist and flow through our day to day reality. They are however only available in the present moment. Perhaps they operate like chance and miracle ...... right place, right time...... May we all find ourselves open enough not to miss one of these great moments! Namaste.

i pod update

Since I'm due for a download update on what my computer calls "jc's gym-pod," I started pondering what tunes have grabbed my attention lately. I play different music at different times of the day, but to kick start my workouts I'm likely to fall for the beats of today's hip hop top 40 and anything that Daughtry, Pitbull and David Guetta have put out. For example, there's 'Nothing But The Beat' by Usher and David Guetta, Chris Brown and Pitbull's 'Planet Pit', Shinedown's 'If You Only Knew', and Adele can do no wrong as her recent Grammy wins can attest. Noticeably absent from the nominee roster however was another favourite of mine, Christina Perry. Her 'Jar of Hearts' remains an all time favourite. Along with the more recent release of the new Twilight movie's wedding theme, '1000 Years', I will no doubt branch out to some music from groups that are somewhat newer to me - Scars on 45, Staind, and about four other names that have slipped into the fog of my 'senior moment'..... to be continued. May your weekend be enhanced by the sounds of your favourite artists, the taste of a fine wine, and food and friends you love.

This is a page out of Fossil's new look book ...... admittedly a little plain Janish, but after all these years, Fossil has won the fall-back position of go-to leather purse and watch provider. Sometimes function wins over fashion. I'm a fan of their watch designs and when I was reminded recently that Fossil is behind the Michael Kors watch line, I didn't feel so conflicted about hunting down my forth Fossil watch when my beloved man watch fell so hard to the stone floor this week, that the second hand flew into the northwest corner of the watch face and suddenly time stood still. As for the purses, I probably have four of them too. There is something to be said for keeping the same system alive in different colours in order to cut down on 'lost key syndrome'. Oh dear, as I read that back to myself, it smacked of old person ritual! Don't worry, I'm still a slave to fashion trends too! Cheers dears.

It's a rare day here in southwest Florida. In a brief hiatus from the usual 80 degree temperatures, the mercury has plummeted and forceful gusts of wind can be heard pushing through screen windows with the howl of a mid winter blizzard. While this is a photo from my Colorado collection, today I can enjoy the sounds of 'home', and the kind of dramatic weather that stirs something deep within. I feel a rush of heart warming endorphins and creative new thoughts - all of which push me in the direction of starting a new project. Before that can happen however, I will likely find myself in house cleaning mode - a procrastination technique I haven't even tried to shake..... whatever gets the job done.... But before that, I must answer to the inner voice that pushes me out the door for a workout each day. Since my craving for a cold breeze against my skin has been answered, I get to stay out of the gym and power walk around the lake several times. As for my nasty case of plantar fasciitis? I have finally had to invest in a top-of-the-line Asics gel shoe. I'm off and running - I wish! The true meaning of silent Sunday will begin when I do.

The Wall Street Journal asks, " When did Superbowl turn into New Year's Eve?" God forbid there be no invitations from friends or family to gather for this blessed event. And if you have accepted an invite, you could save yourself some scorn by establishing the TV 'situation' before you go. If there's 'no crying in baseball,' there sure can't be noses out of joint when the hard core fans sneak off to the bedroom TV.
As a clueless-but-curious football fan myself, I till wonder why more people don't watch the Superbowl the same way they do the Academy Awards - in the comfort of their own living room - where there's minimal screaming and antics following each play and where the million dollar commercials can be truly appreciated.

Each of these bird collages features a different geometric symbol, representing energy, growth, truth and wisdom respectively from top to bottom. For unknown reasons, I have returned to these ancient and sacred symbols with renewed interest. With roots in the study of nature, mathematics, cosmology and modern science, sacred geometry somehow helps to prove the theory of metaphysical oneness - the interconnectedness of all creations in the universe. Whether it is the hexagonal cells created by honey bees, or the perfect chambers of the nautilus shell, there is evidence of perfection in design, pattern and structure. Artists and architects have for years been mindful to include these same sacred universal forms that are also found in light and music. Leonardo da Vinci drew geometric figures with the fundamental measure known as the 'golden mean' or the 'golden ratio.' The sphere is the ultimate expression of unity, integrity and completeness. The circle - a 2-D shadow of the sphere is the icon of oneness and wholeness. To know and appreciate the symbolic value of certain shapes, numbers or creatures is to understand our intuitive attraction to them. The story behind the art ...

I attended a wonderful art show a few weeks ago, and came home with these two prizes - to add to my growing collection of works by Holly Hambrick. Holly continues to embrace and to share her colorful story - that of growing up the black sheep amongst a herd of gypsies ..... she's a truth teller, a pioneer,
and a warrior with intuitive connections and an open heart. When I saw the little dress, and learned that as a child, she had loved to climb trees, I knew she was a kindred spirit. I too spent countless hours climbing and swinging from two great pine trees at my childhood home. I wore sap stains on the back of my legs as proof of time spent being one with the smell of fresh pine and the gift it is to live near a wooded area.
As for Cowgirl Rules.... They tell the truth .... Cry when they need to ....Are true to their partners .....
Ride fast ..... and Shoot straight. I would say that covers all the important matters in life. Happy Trails folks. Enjoy your weekend.

For several years I worked at and or have attended the Aspen Food and Wine event. My interest in drinking wine dates back to my late teens where in Canada the legal age is 19. Winemakers are a creative and enthusiastic bunch, so my interest in discovering new varietals has been influenced by visits to vineyards, wine-maker meals and the general excitement about trying something new, and just loving it. As a visual learner, the keeping of a wine journal has helped me recall my favorites by the art on the labels. Sometimes I purchase a wine because I like the art, and even that has worked out pretty well for me. By now you're probably thinking I haven't met a wine I didn't like. Just to clarify, my most current preference in whites is pinot gris from Oregon, and gruner veltliner from Austria - the cute label with the upside-down deer in the top photo shows one we ordered recently at a wonderful restaurant in Naples called Seasons 52. Every once in a while I'm reminded of how patient I usually am. I wonder sometimes that a little less patience would produce a lot more results at the end of the day. I would rather err on the side of not elevating my blood pressure or needlessly wasting energy that could be put to creative use.

What I didn't learn in my three hour photoshop class today will hopefully put me in the mood for independent study .... something I need to embrace much more than I have. I'm not good with frustration, so I like to be shown how things work. I'm going to work on
this ...... hope you had a happy day!

For many who make attempts at a formal meditation practice, there is simply so much mental chatter going on that the moments of clarity are few and fleeting. The folks at "Meditation Express" suggest that you imagine a rushing mountain stream flowing through your mind. Every time a new thought enters, you throw it into the stream and watch it float away. In my case, the power of fleeting thoughts can trump the visualization, so when I rediscovered these 'memory pouches' I had made some time ago, I wondered if holding onto something tangible and visualizing the distracting thoughts going straight into the pouch might aid my efforts. Alas, my attempts at meditation are so fleeting, that I haven't tried putting this into practice yet. In my own defence, I found the perfect quote to support my failings.

While the year still feels very new, there's a lingering sense that there's still time to reboot, re-align or re- calibrate your direction and goals. As I get older (and hopefully wiser) the idea of 'ritual' takes on more meaning and plays a bigger role in the flow of each day. For instance, a morning exercise outing is a must if I want my brain to function at all during the day. While spontaneity and A.D.D. are my main guides, I do find comfort in a few more mindful touches - once the minutia and mini meals are out of the way and it's finally time to sit still. It's starts with some well chosen music and the lighting of a candle to support my intentions for the day. Abundance need not be exclusive or elusive, but if there is some magic coming my way, I'm pretty sure it's coming from a source deep within. Namaste dear ones.

These are all works in progress, but the important thing for me was to progress beyond the stalling techniques - which I never run out of. Fortunately shame kicks in and I can finally force myself to sit down and stop darting around doing my A.D.D. thing. I'm always reminded of how much fun it is to give these vintage people some context. The dialogue or thoughts almost scream at you when the juxtaposition really works. I think. I am now smitten with the vintage look and feel of the collection - and this is probably last season's styles. If only outlets could offer good deals on the current season's merchandise, it would make the inconvenience of getting to outlet malls worth the effort. Regardless, I was sent looking for a specific bauble, and felt like I had been living under a rock, when I laid my eyes on all the great bling they had to offer at crazy discounts. Thursdays Thoughts on Menu Planning

Only three more sleeps until Christmas, and depending on your holiday ritual for celebrating with a family feast, the big meal could be Christmas Eve - or even sooner. Regardless, the upcoming weekend will evolve entirely around food, friends and family.

I seldom prepare food more than one day in advance, but I use visualization to imagine what it is I want to see and taste for the big event. I can't remember the last time I followed a recipe, but I do love to collect them as inspiration. If the ingredients appeal, then I give it my own twist. For last weekend's family gathering, I ran across a recipe for a cornbread sausage stuffing, so in addition to two other traditional stuffings, I did one with spicy lamb sausages, cornbread and dried cherries. Now for the encore .....
A smaller group on Sunday gives me a chance to cook a smaller bird - so fresh capon it is. I 'm picturing a caramelized onion and wild mushroom ragout to accompany both traditional mashed and perhaps a ginger/papaya infused sweet potato smash. There's got to be one sassy taste surprise in there. I like to finish my brocoli on the grill - in fact, with weather like this, a bar-b-que vegetable medley makes perfect sense.

My passion runs out when it comes to making dessert, but we have two shortbread chefs in the family, and plenty of decadent truffles and squares.

It's true, I have a hard time parting with any bag - from the humble paper bag right up to the hobo bag. As it turns out, even these delicate tea bags have been recycled. Instead of holding loose tea, they now contain our holiday tags.

A whimsical Buddha from George's journey. George is our close family friend from Colorado. An award winning chef and philosopher funny man, he sends daily missives from his travels through Thailand.

Here's a wee taste of his poetic rhetoric on the road north to Nakon Phanom from Mukdahan:
He talks of temples, bones of Buddha and meals in night markets featuring roast pickled forest pig and sticky rice grilled in banana leaf. Hmmm. The mind boggles.

Food Truck Friday

Once a week at the Farmer's Market in Bonita Bay, Florida, the food trucks roll up and set up for business.
The vendor of this pink beast sells 'Cakes and Shakes'.

My first experience with this food truck movement was out in Portland, Oregon, where apparently things really got started. There were close to a hundred such food trucks in a designated parking lot in the downtown core.
There was representation from dozens of ethnicities, and clearly the Tex Mex possibilities were endless.

Hopefully this movement will be embraced as the trend spreads through North America. The city of Toronto has not made it easy- sadly - for the dozens of vendors trying to share their authentic cuisine. It's hard for the rest of us foodies to see the down side to fabulous street food, so hopefully, the passionate will prevail.

Paper Passions

These days when life gets real, we have the means to share our reality with the universe. We also have the choice to do so .... or not. I was conflicted on this one.
What I did want to share was my good fortune in early detection, quick diagnosis and prompt surgery.... the latter being a huge favor and generous gift on the part of plastic surgeon, Dr. Alexander Golger. For this and the wisdom of my inner circle of dermatologist gurus, I say thank you! I love you.

I have two thoughts for this Tuesday ....
1. It takes a village.
2. Remember to smell the roses.

If this treasure looks familiar, you are not mistaken. My dear friend, Colette worked some magic on one of the vintage post cards we found recently at the aforementioned fair in Toronto. We both fell in love with this cherub and decided to share it - as we do so many of our creative ideas and techniques.
It's blessing enough to have an art buddy and dear friend, but kindred spirits are definitely heaven sent.

The Answer Feather is a traditional healing tool for those seeking answers. Like stones, some feathers have more appeal than others, so you are to keep your selected feather with you until - in the next day or so, your answer becomes clear. The ritual is completed by releasing the feather back to Mother Earth after thanking it.
I'm a firm believer in thanking the universe for your answers in advance of actually knowing. The optimism that you will know creates a shift and an openness to intuit a clear path for yourself.

Vintage Postcard Fair

The obsession grows ... and this isn't even my most recent haul of new vintage - (no oxymoron intended) images.
On Sunday I learned about a complete subculture of Torontonians who collect vintage post cards, and belong to the 'club'. My expectations weren't high after what I saw in Brimfield where an entire building was devoted to old post cards, but I had no trouble adding to my growing collection. As soon as we get another sunny day and some natural lighting, I will spread the stash out in my photo studio (bathroom), and share the new new. Here's to sunny days ahead.

Just keeping this image handy as a reminder that the glass is half Full - while I share last week's little credit card fraud story.
Somewhere between my transaction at the Oakville Whole Foods store, and my car in the parking lot, my Visa card was air-lifted out of my wallet and into a few ATM's to the tune of $2K. The most important thing to take away from this story is the interaction in the parking lot with a well dressed European man claiming to need directions in French. As I filed the police report, I learned that they always work in teams, and they practice their distraction techniques until the heist is seamless. Beware the urge to be a good samaritan.
Life isn't always a buddha bowl of cherries, but it can be real. Real real!

Marc Chagall Remembered

The Art Gallery of Ontario invited members to a sneak preview of Marc Chagall and a few other notable abstract post-impressionist painters of the same era. Last Sunday and Monday were devoted to this wonderful opportunity to be reminded of why these masters remain so relevant and popular.
Chagall's celebration of life, passion and whimsy is well documented with his signature inclusion of floating people and animals. His dramatic sense of colour is what I loved when I saw this wonderful exhibition. Try not to miss this one if you live in the Toronto area.

The Art of Book Writing

If listening to Alexandra Fuller speak about the four books she has written is any indication, then waste no time in reading her colourful portrayals of growing up in what is now Zimbabwe, Africa. To say she is animated is clearly an understatement. We met Sunday at an author's brunch in Toronto's King Edward Hotel. Thanks to university connections with my stepson Chris, and his sister Jenn, we got some additional glimpses into the 'before she was famous' antics of this beautiful and spirited author and mother of three. You won't be disappointed!

It hardly matters what comes inside packaging that's this fabulous, but as it turns out, the exotic teas my friend Jane brought me back from Paris last week did not disappoint. And according to Jane, neither did the salesman who waited on her, or the Dammann Freres tea store. The story of her romantic transaction has only added to the unique collection of flavours that I am now savouring.
