Willingness

Willingness is one of those qualities that you can't quantify. You either have it or you don't, and the subject of this collage has it in spades. This gal is so willing that when you cut her out of her background, the reverse silhouette still demonstrates her fortitude. She appears to be ready to conquer the world. There should really be a vitamin supplement out there that boosts willingness .... hmmm.... I wonder if that's what narcotics do for you? .... I think I'll just stick to EFA's, acetyl-l-carnitine and ginko biloba for cognitive support and brain clarity. Wishing you all a clear thinking day.

Summer Sanctuary

With temperatures well above normal for this time of year, thoughts turn very quickly to beach scenes and memories of hours spent sunning and wearing swim suits. Not only are my days of sun worship over, but my eagerness to prance about in a swimsuit is somewhat - make that emphatically diminished.
As consolation, I decided to upcycle an old watercolour
seascape instead. Here's to summer!

Chi

The word 'chi' translates as energy, but it implies a sort of 'life force' energy as well.
I haven't made many 'chi chains' lately, but this fabulous leather bangle from Indigo inspired me to string up a few of my favourite charms and baubles to which you just add your set of keys. This set promises never to get lost in your overstuffed handbag..... just reach for the giant leather bangle!

Soft Sunday

Sometimes I wish there was simply more 'soft' in the world.
As a word, thought, concept and adjective, it conjures up all things good. When life gets hard, there's nothing like an injection of soft to turn it all around. Soft comes in many forms, and I never get tired of the furry version, so thanks to Pinterest - my theme of the week apparently, feast your eyes.... almost makes me wanna purr too.

P.S.

Apropros  yesterday's post and apres I posted, I read an article in Nation's Restaurant News (a trade mag) that touted Pinterest as "The Next Big Thing." According to folks who attended the most recent South by Southwest tech gathering in Austin, Texas, Pinterest is not only the fastest growing social media company worldwide, but it's the third most popular, trailing only behind Facebook and Twitter. It's definitely the easiest of any social media interface, though you need an account with one of the other two in order to log into Pinterest.com. It has a playful informality that allows each user's personality to come through as you browse the entire internet and then proceed to organize your findings. I named my favourite board "Me Likey"for all those random photographic finds that simply make you smile. I'm sure I will at some point latch on to the next big thing, but for now, I'm still finding it pretty pintersting. Cheers dears.

Instagram VS Pinterest

Apparently this was my 'most popular' pin last week. Go figure. I would love to say that I curated it all myself, but I can take no credit whatsoever.  It's just so easy - and addictive to hunt up these gems on the Pinterest boards, that when my daughter wondered why I wasn't using the Instagram app I had on my phone, I had to confess I was having too much fun on Pinterest and wasn't looking for any new distractions. I'll let you know when I fall down that rabbit hole.

Art Buzz

Are you one of those artists who uses the buzz you get from collecting art supplies as motivation and inspiration for the actual art making? I sure am. It must be my primitive need to be the hunter/gatherer. Thanks to the Ink Pad in New York, I satisfied that urge very nicely. The best analogy I can think of is the kid in the candy store ... only paper tape is way better than candy! I treat myself to one or two new ones each time, just to prove  that I do have some self restraint.

Wise Wren

It is said that the wren is a messenger from the Gods, bringing news of future events and power to one's voice. Ladders have a more literal meaning as they speak of moving on, reaching out, or going beyond. The youngsters in this collage are not about to get too far away from the watchful eye of the wise wren. The art piece however has left my hands and ended up down the street at an adorable gift shop called, Wild Bird.  Cheers chickadees!

Nesting

Thank you Graphics Fairy for inspiring today's thoughts on the nest. When a long weekend coincides with instant summer where previously there was seasonal and coolish weather, it's like vacation time in your own back yard. The urgency with which we suddenly need to get the yard or deck ready has heretofore escaped us. My meanderings include visions of the perfect shabby chic cottage/shed right in our back yard. I'll have to keep dreaming about that one, but planters and flowers and herbs are a must. I attempted to get near the go-to spot - Sheridan Nurseries - yesterday, but it wasn't meant to be. I guess that the two police officers controlling incoming and outgoing gardeners was a sign that a mid week excursion will be the only way to get the job done. In the meantime, the garden buddhas are in place, and the fountains will be up and running within the hour. Cheers dears.

Symbolism and The Raven

According to folklore, ravens have become known as the spirit guides who show up when a special event is about to take place. And so, may this trio represent a sign of good tidings and safe travels for all who take to the roads this holiday weekend. Cheers dears.

Hope and Hump Day

While this little birdy sits atop Hope Island on the  marine map fragment of this collage, the rest of us look hopefully forwards to the upcoming long weekend. Traditionally this weekend in May- whether named for Queen Victoria in Canada - or just Memorial Day in the U.S. is the true celebration of the promise of spring, and the turning point for gardeners and weather watchers everywhere.
May today, and your long weekend be filled with hope and celebration.

Monday's Mantra

A Mantra is simply a word or group of words which when recited incites transformation. Mantras invoke thought as they quiet the mind.
It is said that all the teachings of Buddha are contained in the following mantra:
"Om Mani Padma Hum"
These words are said to invoke benevolent attention and blessings from Buddha himself.
This post was inspired by the sight of these tulips in the wild. They too caused my mind to slow down- long enough to gaze with wonder at the amazing show of colour.

Mommy Love

Today is anything but Silent Sunday. Today I speak for all Moms when I declare that the ability to nurture is as healing and transformative as the gratitude we hold in our hearts for the privilege to do so.
Whether your kids are of the furry variety, or humanoid, today you will know that you are appreciated ...... and not just today.
While this is not a photo of my yorkie, there is the same 'snagglepuss' lip curl that I see on my beloved Rocky when he looks up at me lovingly. No, this is my Mother's Day card from my beloved, Ricky, who, like Rocky, comes when I call, and wanders off once I have provided a yummy meal.
Wishing you and yours a warm and fuzzy Mother's Day! xo

Art is where the eye goes

Before last week's visit to New York is nothing but a distant memory, I thought I would post a few more random shots of what it is to experience the creative energy of the city that never sleeps. In contrast to that is the serenity of a well made bed - ours at the Thompson LES.  Complete with a wall of windows, this enormous backlit black and white image  and other design details commensurate with Thompson's edgy style, made for the perfect recovery from our exhausting outings. Notwithstanding the setback to my foot injury, one never regrets a good NY fix and the miles of walking from one great meal to the next.

A Slice of Soho

Random shots from the streets and the stores of Soho and The Lower East Side of Manhatten show us the ongoing transformation. Most notable for me were the effects of a fresh coat of paint and the creative curation going on inside the stores. Move over Anthropology!

Silent Sunday

After a whirlwind four days in NYC, and all the over stimulation that goes with it, I have returned to Toronto to reflect and soak in the calm of our cozy home. The Buddhas in this cave in Thailand seemed the perfect contrast to the streets of Manhatten, Soho, Nolita and the Lower East Side. It speaks to my need to notice peace. There is always peace in the present moment, and it takes but a split second to over ride the noisy thoughts, emotions and stories that constantly invade our awareness. No matter how agitated we may feel, there is tranquility beyond or beneath the drama. To know this is to use your awareness to find it. That, my friends, is not a difficult skill to cultivate...... we just need to be reminded that it exists for all of us.

Namaste.

New Work

This is the 'Sacred Bird of Good Health'. So named because it features the pentagram symbol which was used amongst pythagoreans to signify "health". It was, in fact used as a greeting in correspondance ... "be of good health".

This is one of several pieces delivered to a charming local boutique called, The Wild Bird. I love this country/cottage/chic boutique filled almost entirely of Canadian made accessories for the home.

Stand by for Silent Sunday ..... a little NYC adventure begins tomorrow. Cheers dears!
