Shana Tova and Oy vey!

OK, so how did September slip by so darn fast? Time is moving at warp speed these days, and I would like to slow things down a bit so that I can savour my favourite time of the year. One minute it's Rosh Hashanah, followed by Yom Kippur at sundown, October 7th, and then canadian Thanksgiving October 10th. In the meantime, have a bountiful weekend.  Namaste.

100 Thoughts

Dear over-thinkers,
You know who you are. You delight in finding just the right saying or word of support and encouragement. You have even been known to create special quotes for the special people in your life. So now the smart folks at Sugarboo Designs have taken it one step further with this terrific pad of vintage tinted lined paper and quotes that can be torn off the bottom as a keepsake. So far, it's only available in the United States, but if you're anywhere near Mill Valley, California, there's a delightful shop in the middle of town called SummerHouse. Until I get back there in person, I'm lucky to be the recipient of my friend Jane's well chosen gifts that she says have my name on them. You can say that again!
Cheers dears.

Typewriter Tuesday

Thank you for visiting Zendoll where random thoughts on everything from life's big and little questions to creative inspiration and pursuits of same become top of mind, and are thus shared through this thing called 'blog'. When my friend's six year old started asking questions about my 'glob' one day, I realized how comical our growing lexicon of all things computer related had become.
In keeping with my sensibility for celebrating  randomness and synchronicity, today's post shares my current obsession with finding a working old fashioned typewriter. I will leave it at that in hopes that one of these relics will magically manifest by virtue of my having put this request out into the universe.
We are all connected.  Namaste.

Amazing Monday

Today in Toronto will be held in our memories as a quintessential indian summer September day by which to compare all others..... kind of like this photo I found on Flickr Commons. A rare and inspiring find - the result of which is an 8x36 mixed media collage entitled, Love Thy Brother.

Did you know?

...that onions have powerful antibacterial and antiseptic
properties?
Onions also absorb bacteria. In fact, an uncooked onion is like a magnet for toxins. They can attract and grow bacteria so rapidly that it is considered unsafe to keep a portion of raw onion out, or even in a zip-lock bag for later use. If this sounds overly alarmist, perhaps these documented stories will help convince you.

To ward off the black plague many years ago, onions and garlic were placed in each room.

In 1919 when flu killed 40 million people, a doctor in a rural area learned of a farmer who had placed an unpeeled onion in a jar - one for each room. All members of his family remained healthy during this epidemic.

More recently, I read that a patient suffering from a bout of pneumonia knew about the onion theory, so tried it out. Sure enough, the onion she had placed in a jar beside her bed was blackened in the morning, and she had started to feel better.

Thanks to one of our dear Florida friends for forwarding the onion info. Thanks also to the Graphics Fairy for this awesome vintage print from an 1870'2 gardening book.

P.S. Dogs cannot metabolize onions at all, so like chocolate, keep it away from your beloved pets.

Inspiration Friday

Inspiration is infectious. My friend, Colette needs only the mention of a word to get lift-off, and in no time she will have whipped up a completely inspiring creation. Check out these two precious examples.... I rest my case!

Thursday's Thought

"Don't ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive."   Howard Thurman

Brownstone Gal

This gal hails from a vintage newspaper ad, and serves as a reminder that models just don't pose like this anymore.... thank goodness! I am loving the soft unstructured white jacket though. I can't wait to start wearing my favourite jackets and pashminas. Sweater weather at last!

The Purple Haze

We have all had foggy days, but dementia must be a disaster. This and a diagnosis of alzheimer's disease are devastating blows both to one's dignity and perhaps more so to the circle of family and caregivers. Today I caught the end of a PSA on behalf of the Alzheimer's Association. They are asking everyone around the globe to wear purple tomorrow - Wednesday September 21.  Spread the word my lovelies.

Gorgeous Georgian Bay

What more need I say?
Oh and by the way -
It's 6x6 and resined eh?

QUEEN WEST ART CRAWL

It's 'Pride Friday', 'Brag Saturday', and 'Kudos Sunday'!! This and all the superlatives in the world still can't describe the inspiration that our beloved daughter, Danielle is.  When it's show time, Danielle steps up production and rises to the occasion. Don't miss her booth at this weekend's Queen West Art Crawl! Booth C29 - near the tennis courts. The promise of perfect weather and one of the friendliest events in the city makes this show a Must See. See you there! Cheers dears!

Fall Fitness Mantra

While art and creative thoughts occupy much of my time these days, my past life passion for fitness and training still plays a big role in each day. After 20 years in the industry as both trainer and gym owner, my workouts today are more creative and efficient than they have ever been. I no longer want to spend hours in the gym, nor do I need to, though hot weather forces there just to get the job done.  These days, it's all about getting outside to enjoy cooler workouts and better variety where the cardio program is concerned.
For optimal efficiency, I hit the hills!
Oh to have this view of Georgian Bay after a 30 minute hike to the mountain top! Toronto's numerous ravines offer the next best leg workout, as does the nearest hill where you can focus on repeats and speed increases to maximize efficiency of available time. The same goes for getting your bike out and heading up the steepest hill you can find. I have an unending list of workout possibilities to suggest, but you and I both know, the best one is the one that You will do. With that in mind, your fall fitness mantra is 'OUTSIDE PLAY EACH AND EVERY DAY'.

Everything but the kitchen sink!

I'm back at the drawing board making collages for IN2ART's upcoming 'Small' event in Oakville.
If photography is your creative outlet, then head straight to the Brickworks market in Toronto where
this and other random photo opps are plentiful. Have a bountiful day eh?

Blue jean bracelet

I am always in search of jewelry to go with blue jean outfits, so to solve the problem, I upcycled this piece by adding Swarovski crystals on either side of the blue jean beads. Everything else is sterling silver, except for the background which appears in this photo to look like early Kresge car seat vinyl. This one is already in my Etsy shop.

Silent Sunday

Heirloom eggplants are completely new to me, and while I would rather photograph than fuss with them, I'm sure the flavour is as impressive as their appearance.
Another new word for me today was Darshan.
It is the bestowal of Love, Light and Grace.
The medium through which this is done is called an 'avatar.' This individual is an incarnate of the Divine, and the silent bestowal is done without teachings, rituals or chanting. It is said that with a gaze and touch, the soul, body and  mind can be penetrated with transformative results.
Mother Meera is an avatar who will be receiving and giving this gift at Darshans throughout Canada.

Home is where the art is

The book is called Advanced Toy Making and it was published in 1921. It includes more than 50 mechanical drawings just like this one, and this is why I was compelled to spend $28.00 for a book that is in considerable disrepair. Call me crazy.....  or I'll call myself crazy if I don't find a way to incorporate some of these illustrations into collage backgrounds, or foregrounds. Maybe I will just cut out some of my vintage people and use this diagram as a stage. Have a creative weekend folks. Mine is about to begin with tonight's Cirque Du Soleil performance called Totem. Cheers.

Crystal Blue Persuasion

As this photo appeared, I noticed the dot in the 'third eye' position for the first time. I have had this Buddha for a long time. This dot, or 'Bindu' is referred to as the starting point of creation... so on to my humble creation. It's a 15 inch sterling necklace with a detachable charm containing every possible shade of blue and a few swarovski crystals as well. Head over to my Etsy shop and check it out. Namaste blog buddies.

Praying Pony

I am touched by the request that more and more people are putting out there to pray for their family members during a time of healing or crisis. I couldn't help but observe this prayer pose as I rode my bike past the equestrian center at Sunnybrook over the Labor Day weekend. The iphone didn't do it justice, but the joy of watching horses in the paddock is never lost on me..... nor is the request to send healing thoughts to those in need. Namaste friends.

Labor of Love

It's Labor Day weekend, and while the rainy forecast may warrant a rotten tomato rating, find something you love to do and get inspired by following through on your wishes to do more of it.
I like visiting the Brickworks farmer's market in Toronto where the sight of all the organic produce incites healthy menus and meals to celebrate the harvest.
Eat well.
Love well.
Be well.

Your limo awaits...

Last Sunday's visit to the Brickwork's weekly Antique market in Toronto triggered my imagination...... and now I hope that these photos do the same for you. If you're looking at these limo shots, then already you have taken a little time-out for yourself; so why not linger another moment? Just as long as it takes to imagine yourself in this fabulous limo- driver included.
Enjoy the ride!
