Silent Sunday

I gazed into my herb garden, and what did I see? But a fabulous caterpillar beckoning me.
He was inching along at the pace of a snail posing for photographs, shaking his tail-
He said he was hungry and loved to eat greens;
I offered him parsley, cilantro and beans.

And the moral of the story is: Eat your vegetables!

The Juggler

The Juggler's thoughtful expression perfectly matches the subdued mood of the day. At last there is cloud cover and a fine irish mist to complement the sultry air out there. My gardenia tree has finally sprouted it's first blossom ( they love to be misted on a regular basis).

We continue to juggle our cluster of  family birthdays, so for a few days we'll move the celebration east to the Thousand Islands where old friends and more family await.

As the Civic Holiday and long weekend begin, take a deep breath and find a mantra that will help you go the distance..... try Patience..... and Lovingkindness.

The Crow and the Crown

Ravens and crows have always attracted my attention. My interest grew when I learned that Native Americans believe that animals can act as our spirit guides. They say if a raven shows up, it can mean there is 'magic in the air'. Something special is about to happen. It would indeed be special if someone bought this piece at the Square Foot Show which runs August 5 - 21 in Toronto at the Twist Gallery.
In fairness to the hundreds of artists and attendees at this event, all works are priced at an affordable $200. There is also significance to the red circle known here as an 'enso' for it's continuous brush stroke to form the shape. In Zen and Buddhist traditions, it symbolizes the interconnectedness of all life. I like to think of the concept of each one of us connecting or tapping into universal knowledge and wisdom... infinite potential if you will.  Namaste.

Blessings for Africa

This collage and two others have received their resin coating and will be featured in the annual Square Foot Show sponsored by AWOL Gallery at 78 Ossington Avenue in Toronto. It's a massive show featuring only artwork that measures 12 X12 inches. It runs from August 6th to August 21st.
This piece features the quintessential african acacia tree photographed by my son-in-law, Mike Haines. Check out his amazing website and safari travel business for the trip and photographs of a lifetime.
Namaste today and always.

Purrfection

Don't know it's name, but this cat has swagger! Not a care in the world and more than happy to remain on the roof of a car for the photo shoot. Speaking of which, back to my skylit bathroom which doubles as my photo studio... don't ask...I have tried every other room in the house, but the white surfaces are working wonders for the natural lighting I seek when photographing art and jewelry. Cheers dears.

Holy Hydrangea!

The heat wave of 2011 has abated somewhat, so my first mission was to get back outside and on my bike. This photo was taken right outside our front door where the hydrangeas have grown so tall, they almost need their own zip code!
The good news about all this hot weather is my art-making productivity.
Several new collages are almost ready for their photo shoot and big reveal.
Happy Sunday one and all!

Buddha and the Rose

To have said "The Buddha and the Begonia" would have just sounded wrong, but I'm still struggling with the special words of wisdom I plan to impart regardless of the title. What would Deepak say?
Da.
We will simply remind ourselves of the loving kindness meditation:
"May you be happy, may you be peaceful, may you be free from suffering."
Namaste lovelies.

Breathe

Deepak says just 5 to 10 minutes of mindful breathing can help rewire the brain and balance the para-sympathetic system.
He favours alternate nostril breathing, and a separate but short meditation that goes something like this:

Sit tall, palms open, eyes closed. With an effort to take full breaths, bring your attention into your heart, and gratitude into your thoughts. Stay in your heart as you ask yourself.....
"Who am I?"
"What do I want?"
"What is my purpose?"
"What really makes me happy?"
There should be no expectation of the answers to these questions. They are only meant to stimulate the part of our brains responsible for coherence.
"The neurons that fire together, wire together."
In making a practice of this, we are taking steps to  reverse the chemistry that results from stress and exhausts the adrenals and central nervous system while compromising our health and longevity. Hmmmm. I'm exhausted just thinking and writing about all the damage I've already done. Time to meditate...... O M  mmmmm.

Thoughtful Thursday

I made a special point of remembering to watch a rerun of Dr. Oz yesterday when I learned that Deepak Chopra would be his guest. The teaser promised that the famous doctor/guru would reveal his latest theories to help reverse the aging process. Got my attention in a hurry!
As an early adaptor to Chopra's many messages over the past 20 years, I'm particularly drawn to his brand of science/spirituality. Whether talking about quantum physics or love, he makes sense out of life's biggest questions.
Yesterday's message talked about the bio-chemistry of stress and the neuro science behind meditation. He's convinced that a daily practice of just 5 - 10 minutes a day can do everything from help you lose weight to increasing your longevity. Again.... I'm in! My goal is to share his guided visualization with you over the course of a few posts. To be continued..... thanks for checking in today. Tomorrow we will meditate together.  Namaste.

Mindful Monday

It has occurred to me that the creation of tags - which is tantamount to child's play, helps me balance out the overthinking serious side of my character. It brings balance in the same way that my daily workouts have.
Now if I could just get my brain to force daily art play on my schedule the same way that exercise has been programmed into my DNA. I'm working on it.  Have a playful summer day my lovelies.

Triple Threat

OK, so I'm not some Jack-o groupie glomming  autographs at the stage door after a show, but after yesterday's performance at The Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto, I can attest that Hugh Jackman has proven his chops as a triple threat! It's not that I've ever seen him as Wolverine, but what's not to appreciate in the hulked up hunka hunka crooning, dancing, story-telling funny man?? Our faces hurt after the first of two straight hours of smiling, laughing and appreciating his story of a career full of surprise turns, some regrettable turn-downs - on his part, and a variety of opportunities including a hosting gig of the Academy Awards, and numerous broadway and stage jobs when Hollywood wasn't signing him for a blockbuster or romantic comedy. Holy run-on sentence! The guy has it all!
As for these lame photos? Stepped into the laneway while visiting an old friend at Legends of the Game, and there he was.... made my day!

Happy Bird'ay

If today was your birthday, Toronto's Globe and Mail had a great horoscope:
"The time has come to make up your mind about what you are going to do with the rest of your life. You may have many years ahead of you yet but you need to focus. What moves you the most? Make it your Holy Grail."
As you begin the weekend, and on another level- the rest of your life....
be kind, be true, be you - to you.....
the rest will get it when they are ready.
Patience is a virtue.   Cheers loves.

Remembering Oscar WIlde

" Bad art is a great deal worse than no art at all."
"There is always more brass than brains in an
   aristocracy."
"Life is much too important a thing ever to talk
   seriously about it."
"The proper school to learn art is not Life, but Art."

It's the 'bad art' quote that fit my feelings about this bad art rescue from an old sketch book I rediscovered after at least 20 years. The challenge is always to breathe new life into an old watercolour with even older photograph silhouettes and postage stamps.

The good news is that 12 new canvases are under way.    Namaste.

Gratitude

I've said it before, but today's rambling thoughts bring me back to it again... an attitude of gratitude does more to create a shift in  mindset - a shift that can invoke joy and positivity - if only as fleeting as the thought that produced the response in the first place, it is still a moment of bliss. It's the same bliss I get from stamping a meaningful word on a tea-stained tag. Thoughts and words are powerful forces. We must force ourselves to think before we use our words unkindly. Sadly, there is no delete button for our big traps!
You, my blogging buddies, have warmed my heart with your kind words. I am truly grateful for every time you have taken the time to share your wisdom and your comments.

Muchas Gracias amigas and amigos. Te amo.

Happy Canada Day!

The Royals are here - and red carpets are rolled out everywhere that they will be. "Sparkling William and Catherine wow the capital with down-to-earth charm," reports the Toronto Star this morning.
While so many have fled the city for cottage country, there's a wonderful calm about the town on a holiday like this one. Throw in the picture perfect weather and it really doesn't matter where you are -  all the cliches come to mind. I shall spare you and wish you and yours more days like today. Cheers!
