A Bird in the Hand

A warm south west Florida welcome to my dear friend Colette Copeland of A-bird-in-the-hand fame.
To honour her arrival, the cool temperatures will depart and leave us in the seasonal 70's all week. You would hope that having such a creative house guest in my midst would inspire greatness where blog entries are concerned, but I plan to keep us both too busy for that. Enjoy your week wherever you are.
Namaste lovelies.

For some reason, this has been the word of the day for me. It has everything to do with understanding the nature of human behaviour. The next time you need assurance about an interaction with someone, try to determine their intention. If their intention looks more like an agenda than an act of kindness, then perhaps you can reconcile your reaction. Sleep well dear ones.

One More for Good Luck

Now that it really is Jim McConnell's birthday, he's probably wishing he hadn't partied like it was 1984. I just had to try again to post this third collage that the server had rejected the other day. But that's it. I promise.
Today is my almost sister-in-law Ewa's birthday as well. She and my brother are nestled in the Canadian Rocky Mountains in Banff, Alberta. Ewa herself is a national treasure, and I treasure our friendship. Today I salute her generous heart and the lovingkindness she brings to whomever she meets and whatever she does.   Namaste Ewa. I heart you!

Birthday Boy

The little boy in these collages turns 70 on January 26th. As so often happens in families, there is a grandchild clone by the name of JW to carry on the name and the genetics.

If January is your birthday month, blessings and best wishes to you. Your birthday flower is the carnation or the snowdrop, and your birthstone is garnet.

Garnet brings courage, creative energy, vitality, abundance and awareness. On an emotional level, it helps with balance .

Silent Sunday

"Trust in divine timing. Your future holds something far greater than your past." This was the card I drew from a pack of 50 Grace Cards created by Cheryl Richardson. I selected this with you, my fellow bloggers and readers in mind. Though you are few, you touch my heart with each visit. Your kindness and comments are definitely the icing on the cake. Namaste.

The winter of 2011

This winter may well be remembered by many for the surplus of snowfall and extreme conditions around the country. It is what it is. This is a photo I took more than 10 years ago when we lived in Aspen Colorado. It's a place of exquisite beauty, freakish weather and fabulous friends. While I don't miss the extended days of winter that can hit in September, May and June, it's the spirit of playing outside regardless. Nothing beats stepping outside your door, taking a deep breath, and letting the sights, sounds and smells of the season - whatever it may be - lift your spirits and connect you with nature.  Namaste.

OOPS Update

Problem Solved. See below. May any problem big or small that may have preoccupied your mind or your heart fade away so that you can enjoy this precious moment in time.   Namaste.

Please forgive the duelling dual playlists today. I am doing my best to edit, delete, remove etc. the Jem Radio playlist as I was missing sounds from my Paris Cafe. Perhaps it will be gone when tomorrow arrives. Worst case scenario .... it will play automatically forever, and no one will ever read my blog again.... as you can see, I have brain freeze from trying to speak HTML. Help!

Buddha's Message of Light

"Be a light unto yourself"
It is said that these were the last words of Gautama Buddha before he closed his eyes on his final day more than 2,500 years ago. Whether folklore, mythology or fact, there is as much relevance to Buddha's message today as there always was. His sacrifice to attain enlightenment through hours, days and years of peaceful meditation is as inspiring as his commitment to impart his timeless message to all who would listen. What resonates most however is his conviction that the heaven we seek is within us. When we look within, we will see the light. We are the light that we seek.    Namaste.

Rainy Days and Mondays

The last group of angel amulets represent the musical signs that can come from above.  These experiences are well documented, and I've certainly had friends tell of the coincidental playing of a metaphoric song on the radio.

And now... a craft of another kind.... kraft paper... or is it craft paper? Doesn't matter.  I'm addicted to the stuff, and I'm convinced that every stamp and sticker out there will look better on brown paper. Even the cheap stuff can be turned into an amazing canvas background on which to paint after applying several layers of white gesso to both sides. Allow for drying time between coats.

Target is also a great resource for a good quality gift bag - of the brown variety. It features delightful pink ribbon handles and retails at 49 cents. And now the best news ever for envious Canadian shoppers who have  had to wait until they visited the U.S. to stock up on Target goodies. By 2013, there will be several Canadian Target outlets as they have evidently purchased the leases of Zellers and Bay stores.

Urban Angels

While this angel amulet dates back to the 1920's, and documentation on the subject is as old as time itself, at no other time is their message more needed than today ....  right now. There are numerous resources available on line, and each time I found a new reading, the same message was expressed. The angels really want to remind us of their unconditional love. Cynthia Lee Shelton claims to have been asked by the angels to offer a daily meditation in order to give the angels a voice. At the risk of sounding dogmatic about the topic, open your heart and have some fun with a few of these Angel Card Readings.

The Voice of an Angel

Most of the reference books I've seen on this subject are penned by Doreen Virtue, and I own more than a few. In  "Signs From Above", there are frequent mentions that our guardian angels are always with us, and continually giving us messages through such signs as rainbows, found feathers or coins, and even repetitive number sequences. If any of this resonates with you, then remind yourself to start noticing  your intuitive thoughts and feelings as well as the more concrete messages. Perhaps in doing so, you will send the message that you are open and receptive. I believe in asking directly for the guidance and protection you seek. This alone creates a shift in receptivity that in my experience has made all the difference in how I interpret the sometimes subtle array of signs. Ask .... and ye shall receive.

Angel Amulets

Many believe that angels are messengers, guides, and teachers simply waiting in the wings (pun intended) for our openness and willingness to communicate. According to folklore, amulets are objects that bring protection and good luck. I have always been drawn to items like coins, crosses, gemstones,
evil eyes, hamsas, and any talisman from any religion or tradition that claims to be a part of rituals eliciting positive outcomes and protection from evil. The idea however that guidance and wisdom might exist from the angelic realm is both comforting and inspiring.

My inspiration for this series of hanging amulets comes primarily from the generous gift of my dear friend Lee, whose mother could really use the comfort and peace of all of our guardian angels right now. Lee sourced these babies from a collection dating back to the 1920's. I hope I am honouring their legacy by sharing them with you in this form, and if I can ever get my act together, posting them in my Etsy shop which is sadly void of merchandise these days. I am grateful to Lee for seeing me as a worthy recipient of so many treasures over the many years of our friendship - most of which share this theme of angel guidance. Let's take a little journey together and explore this realm as I reveal the other amulets in subsequent posts.  Namaste.

Come walk with me......

This is  the boardwalk style path leading from Estero Park through the mangrove to the open waterway, and what was once the Old Naples Port. This spit of land near the gulf side of our property was once occupied by the Calusa Indians, and before some of the first roads were completed, it was a thriving port from which products would be transported by horse drawn carriage to both Naples and Fort Meyers.

There are miles of bike paths and trails throughout Bonita Bay. Complete with three separate golf courses, much of the marsh and mangrove has been preserved so that what was once a sanctuary on farm land can continue to be home to exotic wild life and birds.

There are dozens of lakes throughout giving each neighbourhood unique water features that highlight the setting sun each evening.

It must be known that while I'm eternally grateful for this beautiful serene setting, the hearty Canadian girl of yesteryear can shovel snow with the best. If what I hear of today's weather up north is true, then there's part of me missing the joy of a dramatic snow storm, and the pristine blanket of white stuff that incites and invites the child in all of us to just go outside and simply play.

May peace be with Toby

Toby's time had come, and so with dignity and peace of mind, his parents, and my dear friends made that courageous choice. If you have been there, you just know when your beloved pet is ready. The legacy that remains is the pureness of spirit and joy that your pet has brought you as a member of your family. Loss  is part of the win that pet lovers understand only too well. This is one time when the cliche applies perfectly:  It IS better to have loved and lost..... and I embrace every day of unconditional love heaped on me with ridiculous enthusiasm by my Rock .... and my Rick for that matter.   Namaste.

One of a Kind

Now that this little treasure has been gifted, I can share it with you and admire it again myself. It was created by my dear friend, Colette Copeland. She has an amazing eye for composition whether it's jewelry or art. Her juxtaposition of amulets, found objects, words and colour just resonates with the soul. She is also a gifted writer with an ability to distill the essence of her day into an uplifting comment that complements her daily creations. Colette and her work are simply 'one of a kind.'

Chico is my name

Chico is my name, and sass is my game. And yes, since you asked, my nose is just a little out of joint. As my new year's resolution however, I am challenging myself to man up and quit complaining so much. As the embodiment of an ancient and wise Buddhist cat, I must assume my role as spiritual guide and set a good example for those who follow my teachings. Like my guide,  the Dalai Lama, I too believe that all human beings want to pursue the path of peace. Have a peaceful week my friends. Namaste and meow...

It's 2011

Seeing in the New Year in southwest Florida begins with the sunset ritual. It's Rick (my husband) and the girls... he's no fool.

Below we see those last precious moments of sunlight slipping away beyond the horizon signalling our mass exodus from the beach. It's important to move on quickly before the 'no-see-ems' begin their evening meal of ankle flesh.

Before our celebratory dinner, we had time to catch the movie,
"The King's Speech". Put this one on your must-see list as Colin Firth does another exemplary job of portraying the lead and is supported with perfection by the perfectly cast Geoffrey Rush.

As you contemplate what this new year might inspire,  may your hearts be open to that which you cannot change. May gratitude, love and courage help align you with your vision, hopes and dreams, and may many benefit by your actions.

Namaste and Happy New Year.
