This collage features a photo transfer on organza which is hand stitched and glued to a painted background done in fluid acrylics. The subject is one of my adopted sisters from my vast collection of vintage photos.  While she and I may love Paris, I also love New York. I'll be spending the weekend there so stand by for my next post. Have I-phone will travel.....I'm hoping for lots of photo opportunities in Soho where we'll be enjoying life at the Thompson Hotel for a few days. Happy holiday weekend!

Sukha Bird

Sanskrit for good space.
In many traditions, birds are thought of as messengers.
I learned this after my cardinal experience wherein I had the
instinct that my deceased father was communicating with me through
presence of the bird.

Les Yeux

Like many other traditions, Zen asks us to open our eyes and our hearts. This awakening
is designed to make us more present. Let each moment become  precious.   Namaste.

You are on the right path....

Of the many interpretations I have read about the significance of the Inukshuk, this is the one that resonates most for me. We discovered this beauty going east on the 401 just beyond the last exit to Belleville.  Just the practice of repeating the words 'you are on the right path' tends to have a soothing effect on the central nervous system. To me, this is proof positive of the power of both imagery and thought...words spoken, or just mindfully repeated.         namaste.

Happy Birthday To You

If your birthday is two or three days from the beginning or end of  date range, you are "on the cusp," meaning you display characteristics of the sign that precedes or follows the sign you fall under. In the case of July 21, you will also follow the traits of your Cancer sign. Your key element is water, you are ruled by the moon, and your lucky numbers are 2,3,5, and 9.

Enso A symbol of Oneness and Enlightenment

If you're just tuning in to Zendoll, I thank you. You will see this circular zen symbol quite frequently in my work. The Zen system complements any belief while offering inspiration, serenity, and the idea that clarity comes from within.            Namaste.

Triple Threat

Samantha, Danielle and Caillianne - from left to right. While not part of the Beckerman family, the one in the middle, my daughter Danielle, will happily stand in for Chloe Beckerman who has moved to LA.
If you love to be around creative, loving, joyful and exuberant beauties, then stay tuned. Follow the twins and Chloe on their blog. It's a world of fashion fun that you won't want to miss. Danielle's website features her dreamy collage art and an interactive website that invites you to upload your vintage family photos and ephemera for  customized artwork exclusive to your family's history and legacy.

Carolyn's Story

Meet a friend, mentor and artist who has changed my life and supported my dreams. I first met Carolyn
Manosevitz by phone before we moved our family from Kingston, Canada to Aspen, Colorado in 1996.
I was registered to attend one of Carolyn's classes at Colorado Mountain College.  It was the first of many great art classes and workshops with Carolyn over the five years we spent there. Fast forward to the present day, though back in Toronto, Canada now, the encouragement, support and friendship continue.  As a Holocaust scholar, Carolyn's art and educating of seminary students about spirituality and  the aftermath of the Shoah are both her passion and her legacy. She incites the healing process by keeping the memories and stories alive through her art. A true inspiration! A true friend!

A Collage A Day

is my idol.
I am now the proud owner of
a one-of-a-kind original of his.
After quietly following his progress to make
and post a collage a day on his blog, I finally got
off my lazy butt to try and follow his inspiring example.
Speaking of gratitude for my artist guides, if not for the help of
my dear friend, Colette Copeland, I'd still be spending countless hours
reading everyone else's blogs and just THINKING about making some art.
My humble thanks to all my teachers! Tomorrow I will introduce you to yet another.

Visual Interpretation Test

Don't worry, you won't be tested later.
What do you see when you look at this image?
When I decided on the title of
"Keyhole Cats",
that is what I originally saw here, but the very next
day, I saw a wacky face image that I could never have created on my own.

As fun as it is to fit a photo cast off into the picture, I was struck by the back story my imagination created for these children. As often happens when I adopt the people in the vintage photos I acquire,
I just start imagining their story. These little faces did not reveal the usual innocent joy, but I comforted myself by putting them in the pink funhouse to brighten up their days, and mine.

When my beautiful girls show up, my world stands still. It's important to soak up every sweet moment.
The lovely Karyn and her son, Keyan on the left, all the way from Beijing, China. To fully appreciate the work aspect of their life a world away,  click on Virtues in us and Robarts Interiors.
In the middle is my lovely daughter, Danielle, and beside her, dear Sylvia - all the way from Salt Spring Island by way of Uganda. Oh, and that's my 11 year old velcro yorkie, Rockie.
So much to say....so little time.....

Bird Tag Series

Question: What do you get when you cross a hot flash with a heat wave?
Answer:   A whole lots of bird tags!
When 34 degrees C. feels like 42 degrees, it's time to lock yourself inside at the art table until it all passes.

The Dreaded "F" Word

It used to be that during my daily meditation practice a single word would rise above the mental chatter.
I would call it my 'word of the day'.
Today's word surfaced when trying to put myself back to sleep for the upteenth time at about 4 am.
Through a sea of flashing thoughts down drops the F bomb onto the front page of my mind's eye.
FORGIVENESS. I would have preferred that fuzzy pre sleep state, but that too shortly followed the arrival of my 'quote of the day'.

"When we choose happiness, we also choose forgiveness."                Namaste.

TAG You're it!

Creating art on shipping tags is one of my favourite tricks to get beyond my procrastination and a.d.d.
when it comes to art time. The results are instant and you end up with a functional product. The inner critic doesn't even have time to assert it's unwelcome feedback. Time to play!

Sunday Antique Crawl

Sundays are synonymous  with the idea of an outing. The kind of outing you might not take time for
during the week. This lovely collection came all the way from Leadville Colorado, a town that time forgot but the closest one to the great continental divide in the Rocky Mountains. The beautiful trip over Independence Pass has become an annual trek as has a visit to the Antique Mall.

This sacred circle logo represents truth...... only truth remains.
