Inspiration for next year...

While blogging along a few months ago, I tripped over this delightful vignette. While it's not likely that the blogger responsible will see that I've posted it, I hope I can be indulged the chance to share it. These days between Christmas and New Years are both a time for reflection and anticipation. As we begin another transition to our home in southwest Florida, we carefully pack up the decorations, albeit a little prematurely, and prepare for a brand new year. As you look back... and reflect on a year that will soon come to an end, may you tap into your essence, your passions and your dreams with kindness. May your heart be open to change - if change is in your future, and may inspiration find you as you create a plan for 2011. I'll be back as soon as we settle in.  All is well.  Namaste.

Trix are for kids....Christmas too!

Family, friends and fun.

May your hearts be open to the joyful spirit of Christmas,
and may it last throughout the year.

All is Calm, All is Bright

All this vintage really emphasizes the spirit of the season for me. The NOEL banner  and tags came from the Bleu Bird Nest. I heart Kelly Green's take on sweet vintage style. Check her out on Etsy.

'Twas the week before Christmas

'Twas the week before Christmas
When all through
the city -
A soft snow was falling,
And the rooftops
looked pretty.

Our friends to the south have had a big freeze, but now all is well and they travel with ease.

If you and your family
take to the air,
may all things go
smoothly until you
get there.

May all whom you meet share the spirit with you,
May it last through the year and make wishes come true.

Dear Ones

Next week this time, it will be Christmas Eve. Take a deep breath, count your blessings, forget your fatigue, move forward with heartfelt intention, and dig deep for the patience needed to do all that isn't yet done. Passez un bon fin de semaine...... happy weekend one and all.... and to all, good night's sleeps!

Zen and the Art of Drawing

If I knew there were zen to be found, I might do it more often. Fortunately, someone did write the book, so I've borrowed his title, but none of his skill. Drawing is a skill, and when practiced, there are rewards and improvements. I wouldn't know about that, but I do delight in some of the non-dominant hand drawings I've done and some of the very quick sketches that produce a rather primitive child like result. The more I labour over a drawing, the more I ruin it and/or dislike it. Once again ....  Less is More!

Baby It's Cold Outside!

Not even double digit sub zero temps nor driving snow can dilute the joy of the holiday season
and the fact that Baby It's Cold Outside is one of my favourite songs of all time.  Stay warm! xoxo

OM is the sacred sound of the universe which when chanted creates a powerful vibration that promotes inner peace and healing.   Namaste.

Christmas Creativity

It's everywhere ..... except  my art desk....AKA ... the kitchen table. I sure do like to soak it in at this time of year, but, alas, the wheels are spinning just a bit too fast to have some of this year's great sightings rub off on me. No surprise that the above is an Anthropology production, but Restoration Hardware, Club Monaco and Bloor Street in Toronto are equally inspiring sources of mini installations celebrating the season. Enjoy!

Love and advice from the Rock

My 11 year old yorkie, Rocky sends holiday blessings your way with a special wish for all the moms who try to do too much. He thinks you should leave your hearts and schedules open for quiet time with your beloved pets and families. Those moments can be restorative and healing when nerves are jangled, and unfinished todo lists occupy your thoughts. Breathe!   Enjoy!

December in Canada

The great white north  is my homeland, but contrary to the beliefs of my brothers and sisters to the south, we have tropical summers and not all of us live to play and watch hockey. Apologies to any Leafs fans checking in. December is a season of joy and preparation ... a marathon if you will. Much of my delight comes from the seasonal stylings found all over the city and, of course, on line. My adult A.D.D. kicks in to overdrive as my eye catches every creative flourish in the T dot ....AKA Toronto.
Today's inspiration however is fresh from the land downunder.  My cyber buddy, Sunday Collector, lives and works in Australia as a props buyer and stylist. This is part of a shoot for Real Living.
Cheers, Briar, and thanks again.

'Tis the Season

I can finally share this little gift installation now that the recipient has claimed her prize. I must also disclose that the inspiration came from a quick visit to the Bloor Street location of Club Monaco. In
launching their transition to holiday season, they merchandised much of the jewelry collection using vintage pages and paper creations. I came straight home to assemble my own version. My neighbour and friend Sacha Grierson was celebrating her birthday that very day, so she became for me the mommy muse, as it is often her daughter Lola who compels me to run quick for my camera. Can you blame me?

Smell the Roses

When you anchor your thoughts in the simple present moment pleasures around you, there is a moment of clarity, an alignment of essence and soul that is at once deepened. I call it 'my happy place.' Namaste.

Danielle's Recent Work

Her art is as beautiful as her heart. She shares the joy she is to me in what we see ....
in each piece she incites thought, hope, and a nostalgic innocence that breathes
optimism into both past and present. She is indeed the greatest gift.  Her creative spirit
is an inspiration, her work ethic enviable..... and you just know I want to go on as any
proud mama does, however, her work speaks for itself .   Thank you for visiting us.

As Canadians living in the States, we get a double dose of everything Thanksgiving..... including turkey and all the latest recipes featured on all the American networks. By November 25th, my menu is pretty much set for December 25th. More on that later....

In the meantime, I extend heartfelt blessings to all who are observing Thanksgiving, and indeed to all who aren't but did, and even to those who never do. Apparently our British brothers and sisters have never celebrated it.

To better align your mind with the intention of the holiday, click on the following link, Go Gratitude.   Bon Apetit.

Picasso's Legacy

The Bonita Springs Art League used the inspiration of Picasso, the lure of food and wine, and two art studios filled with plates and t-shirts for a recent fundraising evening. The rest, as they say, is history.  There's nothing like a cup of courage to help you get started on a blank canvas ... especially when there's 'no rub-outs'.
Every mark is there to stay.
Even my Rick was feeling it as he bravely embodied Picasso's style to produce one of the night's most brilliant pieces.

Each plate is cured in your own oven for 35 minutes at 300 degrees. Just long enough to enjoy a glass of your favourite varietal.... and since you asked, I'm loving pinot gris from Oregon and Washington State. Cheers and Happy Thanksgiving!

Quote of the Day

In a letter that Vincent Van Gogh once wrote to his brother, he said "Art is something, which although produced by human hands, is not created by these hands alone, but by something which wells up from a deeper source in our souls."  Like this paper surprise created by the display team at Anthropology in Naples, Florida,  a creative soul has redefined what it is to simply merchandise a store with a few cliched reminders of the season. They are reinventing the experience of shopping, and for that reason alone, this is my kind of place.... just to hang out in. No spending required, but I have been known to add to their bottom line out of sheer need.

The gift of connectivity is a minefield. It's a vast wilderness largely untapped until 'coincidence' steps in and connects us. As one who likes to believe that such events are divined and inevitable if we are open to them. I love coincidence as much as the next person, but what I love more is to appreciate the idea of a higher reason for such meetings. Take the little Buddha amulet around the neck of the stone Buddha .....
a gift from the recent gift of meeting Colette.www.a-bird-in-the-hand.blogspot.com. Before I met Colette in person, I had stumbled across her blog a few years earlier. She was and is an enormous inspiration to me. She coached me through the startup of my own blog, and she continues to share her creativity and connections in our shared area of interest. Take some time  to check out the other blogs and people I heart. Talk about a Pandora's Box...... of connectivity.   Namaste.

Welcome to my mini art studio

This used to be the breakfast nook just steps away from the kitchen, but what a waste of space that was. This beats the corner of a kitchen table any day, and the wine fridge offers both inspiration to celebrate, and another surface to use when I really need to spread out. Sadly the art projects are typically 'no-brainers' like stamping on tags, inspiration kits, and parcels with greetings that take up much of the next few weeks that I'll be down south. I plan to celebrate the talents of my creative friends and family over the next several posts, so drop back in and visit all the links.  Cheers!

Tea Tags and Lace

There's only one thing you can do when you shrink a lacy top, and that's use it in your photo shoot. I marvel at the fun it is to get out a bunch of rubber stamps out and just stamp away. What am I ?? a 12 year old? Do something for your inner child today.  Cheers my lovelies.

Greetings from Southwest Florida

And if you're celebrating a birthday this month..... warmest wishes!  Welcome to my second home where typically inspiration has taken me to the jewelery table instead of the art desk. It's just a three week visit  with a busy social calendar so for the next few posts, I'll be sharing photos of my workspace in hopes of actually putting it to good use. Have a productive week my friends.

Blessing to Transition

As the first official cold and yucky day of this changing season and before we transition officially to the winter, I will take today as my cue and blessing to travel south for the winter. Though grateful for the ease of everything in a warmer climate, I am not averse to adverse weather of the white variety. I want it known by all 5 or so of you who kindly pop in and visit my daily words.... that I am not a wimpy canadian. I can play outdoors in a snow storm with the best of them. Furthermore, I actually LOVE to shovel the white stuff. Best workout you can get, notwithstanding the potential for back strain and heart attacks. Enough of that! When settled in sunny southwest Florida, I'll be back at you with a full on Art Attack!  Cheers.

Tea Time

Time for tea staining ..... and there's no wrong way to do it. While some will say you need two tea bags per gallon of water, it never occurred to me to do anything but pour the extra tea into a pan and dip the tags. A second dipping, splashing or spraying makes that leftover tea really go the distance.  Cheers!

Esprit Noir

It had seemed wrong to post an image that was so obviously of that season which is around the corner. The one where the days are short and cold and precipitation is white as well as wet.... but when a few snow crystals were seen to fall a few days ago, horror was not my first reaction. I had a sudden lapse to the days of my childhood when the first snow flakes were something to celebrate. For those of you who don't share the sentiment, then Esprit Noir was aptly named.  Namaste.

The Hangover

For anyone else with a Hallowe'en hangover, meet Sam Haines, who after several days of Hallowe'en themed parties, hype and role playing, threw in the towel after barely collecting a city block's worth of candy. His mother was heard a few hours later claiming there is indeed a God!

Happy Hallowe'ekend

One Halo

One Halo deconstructed:
In reverse order .......  the backstory.....one halo.( Even adopted vintage people have a dark side). Found: one brown paper bag painted both sides in gesso. ABC scrap from Danielle's print making class at art school. Paper tape by Tim Holtz and a couple of red circles. ......  et Voila!
This piece will be mounted on an 8x6 inch gallery canvas board and end up in Oakville, Ontario at the
IN2Art Gallery Festival of the Smalls.

My Hallowe'en Muse

It's not really about Hallowe'en here, though Lola makes an adorable good witch. It's about the pure potentiality of our children. Like so many youngsters I know and love, I see in Lola the gift of creative
spirit and the spirit of artistry in all that she says and does. Listen closely to the children in your life. Listen closely to your own inner child. Your 'happy place' is within and all around.   Namaste.

Memory Pouch #2

As much as I love making mini collages and small charm based jewelry, there are times when forcing myself  out of the comfort zone and into bigger works of art and jewelry would seem a good exercise....or at the very least, a test of character. Alas, I'm either very lazy, undisciplined or just a child at heart because with me and in many areas of my life, Less is More!   xoxo

Zen Market Experience

The Brickworks Market is an organic oasis in the middle of metropolis. Each Saturday from 8 am until 1 pm, farmers, artisans, chocolatiers, bakers and organic providers from all walks gather in a location surrounded by nature and history. From the moment you step out of your car, a feeling of calm takes over your being and you feel instantly transported to a place that time forgot.  With the recent restoration of the original brickworks factory and some creative landscaping, a pocket of vintage history has been reclaimed. It's a weekly trip for me but tomorrow I get to share it with my mother and brother. With numerous activities for children, busking musicians, the aroma of fresh coffee, Buddha dogs and crepes, you might just be lucky to get a reflexology session as the icing on the cake. Head south on the Bayview extension... you can't miss it!
